We were approached to transform the existing spaces that were typical of properties built in the 1930s, to create a new home that met the functional needs of our client, but also reflected their personality and style. This required a complete gutting of the existing house in order to craft the new spaces.

Open and flexible spaces on the ground floor for entertaining, cooking and working were key for our clients, so our design ensured that from the moment they stepped through the front door of the house, they had a visual connection straight through to the rear extension and into the garden. This visual connection not only helped to create depth but also draws you into the heart of their home.

The kitchen and dining space is open and free flowing and, to avoid interrupting or jarring the space, we introduced the concept of a ‘service module’ along the side wall, subtlety designed to house our clients pantry, utility room, shower room and guest WC.

The main bedroom was strategically placed in the new loft conversion to capitalise on the surrounding views.

Zinc cladding played an important part in unifying the two new additions to the property, and the cladding also features subtle lighting to illuminate the material at night. Clever lighting has been used throughout the property, our highlights being in the exposed steelwork, and within a few subtle recesses, or shadow gaps, where the walls meet the ceiling. These lighting strategies help to create softer tones and a feeling of calm within the internal spaces.
