BrocklEy apartment

Nestled within the Brockley Conservation Area, this two-bedroom apartment refurbishment with an open plan lounge, kitchen and dining space maximised every inch of space within this Victorian apartment.

The original space had lots of doors and narrow corridors which made it dark and disconnected. Despite benefiting from a rather large terrace facing a tree-lined communal garden, this was almost hidden rather than celebrated and embraced.

We worked alongside our clients, a young couple, to design a space that celebrated light and connection. Our chosen design solution relocated the bathroom and kitchen space into a central hub housing the kitchen, utility cupboard and bathroom. The hub wall sits short of the ceiling to introduce a hidden mezzanine area for storage of larger items (very necessary for smaller London flats!). This area is screened by plywood cladding to create a more seamless finish.

Engineered wood has been laid out in a Herringbone pattern throughout the apartment, and the introduction of substantial soundproofing to insulate the clients from their neighbours above and beneath the apartment was critical to the design brief. Elements of bespoke joinery are dotted around the apartment to assist the clients with their day to day activities and needs. A teal/grey kitchen with bespoke door handles and exposed steel beams are some of the beautiful elements within the apartment.

Never before has outdoor space been more important to city living, and the apartment now benefits from a remodelled, spacious terrace with hidden storage beneath the timber decking.

The finished result is a warm, light space that draws you in as soon as you enter, fully realising the potential our clients saw when they first purchased the flat.
